Granata Farms Summer 2011

On Saturday, March 30^th, the Sustainability Park at 25th and Arapahoe was host to a fundraiser event for the Urban Farmers Collaborative. Food trucks, live music, tents with sustainable products (and advisers) and lots of interested people filled the site from 11:00-7:00.

First Annual Sustainability Park Fundraiser

I was there, but not there to eat and play as it was a work day at Elaine Granata’s urban farm. We worked on the new espaliers since she recently planted 3 pear trees and 3 apple trees. We also put down the rest of the filter fabric and crusher fines in the pathways.  The raspberries are greening and there is work to do in these beds to improve the trellises….maybe next week once my back stops hurting!

If you are one of the dozens of volunteers who helped WiD Outreach build the 33 raised cedar beds last Spring 2011, then you remember this urban farm. Elaine Granata is on the Board of organic farmers and she has three urban farm sites. She practices all organic methods and sells produce to her CSA shareholders, restaurants and small grocery stores around the metro area. (CSA refers to a model of farming in which farmers sell harvest shares (vegetables, flowers, meat, etc.) directly to people in the local community.)

WiD Volunteer Build Days

Elaine’s urban farm Downtown is on a DHA (Denver Housing Authority) owned site and has become a temporary home to several Humanitarian Housing structures on display. Green Leaf, Produce Denver and Feed Denver are also on site. Stop by and check it all out!

The documentary “Jiro Dreams of Sushi”, now playing at the Mayan Theater in Denver, is a stunning film about the life and art of Jiro Ono.  Jiro is the 85-year-old sushi chef from Tokyo who is considered one of the best sushi chefs in the world.  This film elevates the process of making food to an art, and the stunning scenery will be of interest to designers and sushi lovers alike.  If you can’t catch it at the Mayan, make sure to get it on your Netflix queue.  This film is a treat, and will surely make you crave sashimi and a trip to Japan!

MCA Denver:

Make sure to catch the newest exhibition at the MCA Denver.  “Bruce Conner and the Primal Scene of Punk Rock”  and the photographs of Richard Peterson are now on display at the MCA.  Both artists explore the subject of musicians, and punk rock specifically, in a way that focuses on the intimate and ecstatic moments that unfold in a punk performance.  Don’t miss it!   www.mcadenver.org\

Last week we had a quick 45 minute model exercise where the teams cut up cereal boxes to tape together mass models of the buildings.

Each year ACE presents the students with an RFP and they have to design based on the program in the RFP packet. This year the kids are designing a history museum that has to tie into what it means to be a teen in Colorado. They were given 3 sites- one in Downtown Denver, one in the Stapleton area, and in the Foothills.

It was fun and felt a lot like Box City (http://aiacolorado.org/events/COArchitectureMonth/BoxCity.aspx), except for teens. Mentors are always needed so if this is something that sounds fun to you, feel free to contact ACE at the link above to be added to their email list for the Fall 2013 program.
