Everyone seemed to pick it up pretty quickly and the bouquet flourished. There was lots of socializing and

We also had two prizes to be giving away to participants at the event. Congrats to our two winners; a Teknion Conflex desk lamp:

Carmen Schechinger and Teknion Fits chair to Kay Wilson. Thank you to our sponsor, Caven Hill with Teknion.bits of frustration but overall everyone had a great time.

Everyone took a few of their flowers home and the rest were used to put together a bouquet on the recycled SIP panel from the Habitat for Humanity build day. This is our way of “paying it forward” to the Habitat project – using leftover materials to create a unique piece of art that will look good in any environment. These also can be a memory keep-sake, by making the flowers out of pictures from a build day.

Our goal is to make and sell enough of these to purchase an IKEA kitchen for one of the duplexes. We will be selling and advertising for these at all of our events. If your interested in purcahsing one please contact widinfo@widdenver.org

Our volunteers gathered once again on a beautiful sunny morning up in Kittredge. The Blue Spruce Habitat team was ready for us with a brand new list of things to do. Those who were most comfortable with heights strapped in and headed to the roof to install the wood framed overhangs. Those less inclined to stand on top of the world built the frames on the ground and hoisted them up. Others worked with expandable foam, grinders, nail guns and more. We were very busy all day and got a lot done.

The weather was perfect on Saturday, and so were our volunteers. We stopped off in Evergreen this time for some reportedly awesome burgers. Our table was packed with 16 hungry helpers and we had a lot of fun getting to know each other. Some of us stayed to sing….but that’s a whole other story and one that should stay in Evergreen.

Once again our WiD build day was a total success and we all had a blast learning new skills and helping out Habitat for Humanity. This was supposed to be our last build day for a while but they love us so much that they have asked us to come back every Saturday. We took a vote and everyone agreed that we need to do this again. We are looking at another WiD build day in late April or early May, so stay tuned and sign up!

Don’t you just love it when you meet someone at an event and they are just the connection you are looking for? Well, that is exactly what happened at our 1st annual Women in Design VIP Membership party last month.

As a member of the WiD Steering Committee, I arrived early to help set up for the event. There were only a few of us there, so it was a great opportunity to network and that’s when I met Cameron. We got to talking and I asked him how he got involved in Women in Design, he said that he was involved with Habitat for Humanity on a site that Women in Design was also assigned too. This was where it all started. He was given the task of installing tile in the bathroom alongside Connie (a fellow WiD member) and the connection was made. They tiled, laughed, and had a blast together. From there Cameron met other WiDs and husbands of WiDs and kept in contact with them. When the membership party rolled around Connie asked Cameron if he wanted to attend and help set up and he was very willing to help out.

We got to talking about his career and I learned that he had a Bachelors Degree in Architecture, had recently moved to Denver in November, and was currently looking for a position. He didn’t have much experience but had a positive attitude, seemed to be very action oriented and a quick thinker. The great part for me was that I was actually looking to fill an open position in my CAD Store Planning Department. The position had been open for about a month and my recruiter had not had much luck finding many qualified candidates.

Then the conversation shifted to me and we talked about my career. I mentioned that I was the Manager of the in-house CAD Store Planning Department at Sports Authority. Coincidentally, he had sent his resume over to apply for an opening in that department last week! It might have been in my recruiter’s inbox, or she may not have passed it over to me based on his experience. Either way it’s amazing how different it is meeting someone and learning about them in person versus trying to figure out what they are all about from a resume.

So we exchanged information and the next day he sent over his resume/portfolio. I brought him in that week to interview with myself and the Supervisor that he would be working for. She also happens to be a member of Women in Design. The interview went great and we offered him the position. He accepted and started the following Monday. I was hoping our first annual Membership Party would be a success and it was not only a success for the WiD organization, but also for Cameron and I.

On January 25th we had our inaugural VIP Membership Party to celebrate our members and VIP punch card program that we launched in 2012 to encourage members to be involved with WiD.

On January 25th we had our inaugural VIP Membership Party to celebrate our members and VIP punch card program that we launched in 2012 to encourage members to be involved with WiD. This is a rewards program available to WiD members only; punches are granted at events and collected at the end of the year.

We were floored with donations to give away to lucky participates and new members that joined that night. We had around 150 people attend to enjoy cocktails, appetizers, music, a photobooth, and shop tours of Von Design. Plenty of fun was had as many new connections were made and old ones reunited. Due to the overwhelming positive feedback and great turnout we have decided to make this an annual event!

Not only was this event fun but it was a huge overall success for our organization. We increased our membership the night of the party by almost 20% and now have a total of 231 active members. Our theme this year is “Building Community, Community Building” and we definitely feel like we are starting this year with a strong community of women in the professions serving the built environment. At this event we also collected enough money from our drink donations to cover the cost of the foam for our “Cushions for a Cause Habitat for Humanity Project”. Thanks for your generosity and support!

We also met many enthusiastic members eager to get involved which builds upon the momentum and energy of our organization. We are looking forward to seeing all of the new faces as well as our current members at our upcoming events in 2013!

Watch our newsletters and website for the upcoming news and events as well as the date for our Second Annual VIP Membership Celebration in January 2014. If you have not received your punch card yet, don’t worry, we have them at all of our events, so pick one up at the next event!
