Inspired by the American Institute of Architects’ Women in Architecture committee, Women in Design | Denver was formed in 2005 by Cheryl Bicknell, Martha Bennett, and Peggy Kinsey to foster a self-supporting community of women across the design professions. The first meeting attracted nearly 50 women working in various facets of engineering, architecture, and interior design. WiD continues to grow in number and in diversity, providing members with a uniquely cross-disciplinary experience.
Based on the interests of the women who joined, WiD first offered a mix of social, community service, and professional activities. Eventually, a strong educational component was added in, and based largely on that focus, the group filed as a non-profit in 2009. In 2010, Women in Design acquired 501(c)3 status, and a new age had begun.
